- ➤ Robert Olzweski, a North Dakota veteran who served nearly 40 years in the Army, received a Purple Heart after being injured in Vietnam — his story shows North Dakota tough and the need to save every document for VA help — and later he served in the Army Reserves until 2003 with deployments to Guatemala and Uzbekistan. - ➤ Julie Schirado from Furry Friends Rockin’ Rescue introduced her energetic 5-month-old tuxedo kitten Burleigh at Petsmart in Bismarck—visitors can learn how to get involved with local animal care. Next weekend, Send-It in Mandan will host Darts For Dogs & Cornhole For Cats, with registration for Darts starting at noon and Cornhole at 3 p.m.—the event will support the rescue’s efforts. KX News
- ➤ Students at Mandan Middle School planted 120 flags on Thursday before Veterans Day to honor local veterans. They raised $1,352 through class fundraisers—placing their school 48th among over 1,000 participating and arranging for sponsored flag pick-ups next week. KX News

- ➤ Native Inc is finalizing plans for a new cultural center in Bismarck that will feature a gym, auditorium, sweat lodge, healing center and cafeteria, with three acres of its 11-acre site reserved for free housing for families. Founder Lorraine Davis said the project is estimated to cost between $27 and $35 million and will be built within the next five years — it is open to all families. KFYR-TV

- ➤ The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe filed an appeal on November 5 to challenge the operation of the Dakota Access Pipeline running near its reservation on treaty-protected lands. Tribal officials say the pipeline violates environmental laws and risks water safety, and they want it shut down until it meets all federal rules — a necessary step to protect their resources. - ➤ Fire departments across the state are upgrading to NERIS — a new cloud-based system that will replace NFIRS and improve how emergencies are reported and analyzed. Departments must finish onboarding soon to use real-time dashboards and GIS reporting before NFIRS shuts down on January 1. KX News

- ➤ North Dakota has renamed its Human Service Centers as Behavioral Health Clinics to better show their focus on mental and behavioral health care, a change approved by the legislature. - ➤ Costco is recalling nearly 1 million bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG—sold from April through August—after reports that some bottles shattered and caused a laceration. - ➤ Yesterday at noon, deer gun season opened with thousands of hunters seeking deer tags as the Game and Fish Department issued fewer tags, resulting in only 42,300 successes. Game and Fish workers tested northwest units for chronic wasting disease near Williston, Tioga, and Crosby and noted that first-time youth hunters took part—while hunters in five southwest units returned around 100 tags due to EHD and the season will close on November 23.
