COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Tom Braun and his son Chris + Chance Sticklen discussed the upcoming Horror on Harmon haunted house event, a decades-long tradition running from October 31 to November 1 with a $15 admission fee. KX News
- ➤ Great Plains Food Bank started an emergency fundraiser as SNAP benefits may be paused in November if the shutdown continues. The food bank, which supports 196 partners, aims to raise one million pounds of food + half a million dollars in six weeks to help local pantries. KFYR-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe declared a state of emergency because the federal shutdown may cut aid from programs like SNAP (which include LIHEAP and WIC) many members need to cope with high unemployment and poverty. The tribe warned that these cuts could leave its community without vital health and welfare support. KFYR-TV
- ➤ Sen. Hoeven praised the Industrial Commission’s approval of $45.1M in state grants for enhanced oil recovery projects in Bakken as a key step in his Crack the Code 2.0 initiative that will boost oil production and support the coal industry—federal and private funds are planned to raise the total to about $171M. - ➤ North Dakota officials committed $45 million on Monday to enhanced oil recovery projects—aimed at extending the life of the state's oil fields. Bismarck Tribune
- ➤ Paul Sundquist, a former noncommissioned sergeant who served in the Army Military Police from 1972 to 1975, shared his story today from his time in Germany — where he faced drug and racial issues while protecting missile access. - ➤ The City of Bismarck returned a 1926 Seagrave fire truck to its fire department—purchased from the Beck family for $25,000 as a tribute to its firefighting history. - ➤ The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is testing deer samples for Chronic Wasting Disease as part of its ongoing Hunter-Harvested Surveillance program this hunting season. Hunters in units 3A1, 3A2, 3A3, 3B1, 3B2, 4A, 4B, and 4C can bring samples or use a self-sampling kit – note that deer shot in the head cannot be tested. KX News

- ➤ During Winter Weather Awareness Week, residents are urged to dress in layers including thermal clothes, insulating outer wear, and waterproof boots because wind chills of -40°F or lower can cause frostbite in minutes. Officials advise limiting outdoor activities during Extreme Cold alerts—dangerous conditions that need immediate precautions. KX News
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Bismarck native Charlie Vig announced his commitment to play hockey at Bemidji State next season. He played for the Century Patriots and spent two seasons with the Omaha Lancers & will join his brother Max at Bemidji State. KFYR-TV
- ➤ South Border football traveled 266 miles from Wishek to Walhalla in the first round and beat North Border — they will now play a closer rival, Linton-HMB located 30 miles away, in the quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov 1 at 1:30 p.m. KFYR-TV
- ➤ Bismarck Parks and Recreation announced that three public golf courses—Pebble Creek, Riverwood and Tom O’Leary—will close on November 1, making October 31 the final day for play. Mandan Municipal is already closed and Prairie West will shut on November 2 while the Fore Seasons center remains open year-round with simulators and indoor driving ranges. KX News
