ECONOMY NEWS

  • Chevron confirmed 111 layoffs today in Minot and Tioga as part of a broad consolidation after its $53 billion merger with Hess—exceeding earlier estimates and adding to a record of oil and gas job cuts. North Dakota Health and Human Services highlighted Substance Use Prevention Month with a new toolkit and declining teen alcohol use, and the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo ended Sunday with local athletes winning titles in several events.  KX News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Education Department cut 466 jobs on Friday, including many in special education—North Dakota’s Department of Public Instruction said services for students with disabilities and other programs remain unchanged. The department said current funding is in place to support schools and families.  KX News
  • Bismarck Public Schools is installing communication stations on playgrounds—large boards with symbols and words that help kids communicate when they do not speak. The pilot board at BECEP Preschool is active and the district will expand to six elementary schools this year with plans for all schools to have one in four years.  KX News
  • Gov. Armstrong congratulated state Superintendent Baesler on Oct.7 after the Senate confirmed her as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, and she will assume her role after the government shutdown ends. Baesler, the state's longest-serving superintendent, thanked Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer for their support — underscoring local leadership in education.  KX News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Farmers largely finished harvesting small grains like wheat, barley, and oats, but they have not started on sunflowers and corn as warm weather supports crops with wheat averaging 52 bushels per acre. A major defense bill boosts troop pay 3.8% and funds base upgrades including at Minot — legislators will reconcile differences in a conference committee to move it forward.  KX News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Father Bruce Rittel gave his two daughters a ’65 and ’66 Mustang that belonged to their late mother after he found the cars on a local online marketplace and learned about their family history—he called the chance a 'God-incidence.' The family will show off the vehicles by driving around Main St. before the snow comes.  KFYR-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Shane O’Connell celebrated his 30th birthday with a win at the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo by claiming the average title in bareback riding with 250 points — edging out competitor Clay Jorgenson who scored 249 points. Other champions in events like steer wrestling, bull riding and barrel racing will represent the RAM Badlands Circuit at the NFR Open in Colorado Springs in July 2026 — advancing to the next stage of competition.  KX News
