COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Bismarck Fire Department hosted its first Fire Prevention Week Open House at Fire Station 4 to show rescue demos, fire attack drills, and search procedures while sharing fire safety tips. Firefighters thanked families, friends, and sponsors (Walmart, Sam’s Club, Coca-Cola, Spiffy Biff, Kirkwood Bank and Trust, Ace Towing, and Bismarck Public Works) and said they look forward to next year’s event.  City of Bismarck

ECONOMY NEWS

  • North Dakota's manufacturing community celebrated local workers during a luncheon in Bismarck last Thursday as part of Manufacturing Month—organizers noted the event honored over 28,000 jobs with an average salary of $75,000 and stressed the need to show young people the range of modern manufacturing careers. This celebration highlighted how the industry touches every part of the state and supports good-paying, stable work.  KX News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, BPS approved Project: Play and SpeAACk to install AAC boards at every preschool and elementary playground so children with communication needs can express themselves—each board costs about $2,500 as the district seeks community sponsors. The project builds on success from an indoor AAC board used at the Early Childhood Education Program.  KX News
  • The Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library was honored with the Future-Focused award at the 2025 NDLA/SDLA/MPLA Tri-Conference in Grand Forks (one of only four libraries in the state to receive it) and library representatives said the award reflects their strong commitment to community outreach and service quality.  KX News
  • The Innovation School in Bismarck celebrates Farm to School Month by teaching students about agriculture and nutrition with a hydroponic garden, supported by the state Department of Agriculture, Soybean and Corn Councils. Students plant crops indoors to learn modern farming methods — using less water and space as winter approaches.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mandan Fire Department upgraded its fleet by purchasing its first search and rescue boat—a 16-foot inflatable watercraft with a depth finder, side scan sonar and thermal imaging to aid in rescues along nearly 24 miles of shoreline. The boat was funded by North Dakota Game and Fish along with donations from community partners.  KFYR-TV
  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong proclaimed Oct. 10 as First Nations Day and November as Native American Heritage Month in North Dakota to honor Indigenous contributions to our state’s history, culture — and economy while urging stronger partnerships with tribal groups.  KX News
  • Mandan Police retired its first police K9, Kupper, after six years of service during a ceremony at Dykshoorn Park. Handler Sgt. Josh Scherr now permanently cares for the 8-year-old German Shepherd who worked in narcotics detection and apprehension, and the department will continue its K9 program with a new dog planned in the 2027 budget.  KX News
  • North Dakota Job Service started the Job Pod podcast during the COVID lockdown to help local job seekers learn about career opportunities. Workforce Center manager Dustin Hillebrand said the 81-episode series will feature local industries and the next episode on Veterans Services will air ahead of Veterans Day—meeting a key need for timely employment information.  KFYR-TV
  • Amid the federal government shutdown expected to continue into next week, military installations in North Dakota are bracing for short-term disruptions and possible long-term effects as about 600 civilian workers at Minot Air Force Base were furloughed. Job Service North Dakota released state and national support resources for affected federal employees and military families—Governor Kelly Armstrong criticized the shutdown for being costly.  KX News

  • Local leaders are teaming up during National Bullying Prevention Month to help families discuss bullying—North Dakota Health and Human Services has released an activity book for caregivers, teachers and families to use through October. Officials say the toolkit offers simple steps to build kindness and respect at home and in schools.  KX News

  • Sportsmen and women are preparing for pheasant season that starts tomorrow morning as Game and Fish biologist RJ Gross expects more young roosters in southwestern areas where rains forced hens to renest — hunters can take up to three roosters daily with the season ending on January 4.  KX News
