COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission has released free walking tour brochures that detail Highland Acres Historic District and its notable historic buildings + residents can pick them up at the City of Bismarck Community Development Department office during regular business hours.  City of Bismarck
  • On Wednesday evening survivors and supporters gathered at the State Capitol for Take Back the Night to raise awareness about domestic violence — placing photos, teddy bears and balloons to honor victims.  KX News
  • NATIVE, Inc. is hosting a human trafficking awareness training class on Tuesday, Oct. 7 (at 2403 East Thayer Avenue from noon to 1:30 p.m.) to help community members recognize signs of trafficking.  KFYR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Earlier this week, Bob and Wanda Serr announced the closure of The Little Cottage Cafe, a Bismarck staple since 1965, as Bob struggles with bone disease in his foot that hampers long work hours. They plan to sell the restaurant’s contents so it can reopen soon, and Bob will have foot surgery later this month while both look forward to retirement—leaving behind customers who call them family.  KFYR-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Soybean farmers in Wing face one of their toughest harvests as low prices and Argentina’s aid package squeeze their margins—fourth-generation farmer Chase Dewitz is storing half his crop for better rates—while officials call for aid and improved trade deals.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colleges in North Dakota have reached record enrollment levels as more than 47,000 students attend NDUS schools—the highest since 2014 and nearly matching the 2011 record. Bismarck State College and University of Mary reported strong gains driven by varied programs and workforce-focused initiatives.  KFYR-TV
  • Bismarck State College recorded a fall semester with over 4,500 students and 530 residents while still keeping a close community feel. The college is expanding its programs by adding new baccalaureate options and launching 19 NAIA athletic programs—an effort to meet local workforce needs.  KX News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Industry leaders and state officials met on Thursday in Bismarck at the first Governor’s Workforce Summit to create plans to fill local job openings—Commerce’s Katie Ralston Howe said input from local groups is needed to address the job shortage. Governor Kelly Armstrong said he will build on past efforts and support training centers to help students prepare for high-demand work.  KFYR-TV
  • Governor Armstrong criticized the government shutdown as stupid and expensive at the Governor’s Workforce Summit at Bismarck State College, saying that Washington is focused more on politics than on people. His administration is preparing for potential impacts by gathering real-time details from agencies—while officials estimate a 25% chance the shutdown will last between two and five-plus weeks.  KX News
  • The Mandan Fire Department has a new rescue boat—equipped with sonar, thermal imaging, and lights—that will help save lives on the water. Firefighters trained with Bismarck Rural Fire and will store the $82,000 boat at Fire Station Two in Lakewood; half of its cost came from community donations and a local grant.  KX News
  • Governor Kelly Armstrong declared October Foster Youth Voice Month to give children in foster care a say in decisions today—1,100 youths are in care, down from 1,500 in 2020, with those aged 14 or older decreasing from 456 to 291. The proclamation supports a child welfare redesign that keeps kids safely in their homes through programs like FamilyFirst Services and KinshipND.  KX News
  • North Dakota public school superintendent Kirsten Baesler is expected to be confirmed as Assistant U.S. Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education on Monday—Senator Kevin Cramer said the block voting rule change helped move her nomination forward. Baesler will resign her current role once confirmed.  KX News

  • Clinicians and school staff in Bismarck attended SPARCS training Thursday afternoon at the North Dakota Gateway to Science to learn ways to help teens cope with trauma and manage stress — early results show the methods reduced PTSD symptoms and improved problem solving.  KFYR-TV
