COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Dakotans are joining the Crunch Off, a contest among seven states to eat local produce during Farm to School Month, which began on September 15 and will run until the end of October. The state's Department of Agriculture aims for 750,000 crunches from schools serving produce such as apples, cucumbers, beef, and bread — a move to support local farmers.  KX News

  • A mobile home fire in Bismarck took the lives of five dogs—no people were hurt.  Bismarck Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Eleven rural communities in North Dakota will receive $1M in grants from the Rural Grocery Store Sustainability Grant program to help local stores upgrade equipment and cut costs—each award comes with a 20% local match. Officials said the program, established under Senate Bill 2228, will support small-town grocers and improve food access.  KX News

  • North Dakota’s State Board of Higher Education voted Tuesday to name interim Chancellor Brent Sanford as the permanent leader of the University System—he previously served as lieutenant governor.  Bismarck Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bismarck residents with a current utility bill or valid driver’s license may bring household hazardous waste and electronics for free disposal at the landfill during Landfill Free Disposal Week from September 29—October 4 due to previous unfavorable conditions. The recycling center will stay open 6:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m. that week, though a fee applies for tire disposal.  City of Bismarck
  • North Dakota Game and Fish Department has launched the Hunt for Tomorrow campaign to promote ethical hunting as fall season nears—this effort urges hunters to respect private land, check posted signs, dispose of carcasses properly, and report poaching while experienced hunters mentor newcomers.  KX News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Secretary of State Sandy McMerty said on Tuesday at the Legislative Procedure and Arrangements meeting that new security rules for candidates and office holders aimed to balance transparency with personal safety amid political violence. She noted that while current documents require publishing residential addresses and lawmakers failed to remove them from campaign filings, candidates may soon choose which address is shared—offering a new option for protecting personal information.  KX News
  • The Legislative Procedure and Arrangements Committee voted to recommend new legislation that clarifies how vetoed bills are handled after session—requiring the Secretary of State to return them to their chamber and setting a special session on the third Wednesday in June to reconsider the bills.  KX News
