- ➤ People in Bismarck got free haircuts, clothes, food, and housing help on Wednesday at the Dream Center on Park Avenue. More than 25 groups offered resources and support—serving as part of the annual Project Service Connect hosted by the Missouri Valley Coalition for Homeless People. KX News
- ➤ Marilyn Hagerty, a beloved columnist whose viral Olive Garden review won national praise, died Tuesday at a Grand Forks hospital from complications of a stroke—she was 99 and had written for over 70 years. KX News
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ J&R Vacuum and Sewing, a downtown Bismarck staple for nearly fifty years, announced Wednesday it will close in November. The closure ends decades of service for local customers. Bismarck Tribune
- ➤ Four businesses—Soda Drop, Pronto Chore, Learning Loft Childcare, and Dakota Soda—were named to compete in Mandan’s Business Pitch Challenge on October 15 at Central Station Bar & Events with doors opening at 5 p.m. and presentations starting at 5:30 p.m.; the finalists will receive coaching from the ND Small Business Development Center and compete for prizes including a $10,000 forgivable loan from the Mandan Growth Fund. - ➤ Spirit Halloween is open for the 2025 season in Bismarck and now serves customers with seasonal merchandise. The store at the old JoAnn Fabrics on State Street operates Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.—three other locations in North Dakota also welcome shoppers. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Dakota broke its tornado record by confirming 73 tornadoes in 2025, surpassing the previous high of 61 set in 1999 — with at least 15 tornadoes from a severe outbreak on Sept. 14 and additional surveys expected to raise the final count. KX News
- ➤ The EPA provided $2.8 million in grants for ten projects aimed at stopping water pollution across North Dakota—focusing on nonpoint source pollution. The projects will work in watersheds like Maple River and Wild Rice River—improving water quality and soil health. KX News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Burleigh County Commissioners approved a $97 million 2026 budget after cutting $7.2 million from the original proposal during a five-hour meeting on Sept. 15 — a move that greatly lowers the taxpayer levy. The plan sets about $43 million for the general fund, projects a net levy under $4.7 million, and includes a 75-25 cost split for public health — a key step toward creating an independent county department. - ➤ The Public Works Utility Operations Department will flush fire hydrants in parts of Bismarck from Sept. 22 to Oct. 3 with testing from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. - ➤ The Bismarck State College Foundation received a $75K grant to support the new Mystic Smiles pediatric dental clinic at 210 W. Century Avenue and to launch dental career pathways—funds used to buy advanced 3-D imaging equipment and upgraded sterilization technology for underserved children. The clinic, which opened in May, trains future dental professionals. KX News

- ➤ Jordyn Rood, a senior athlete who set a record for blocks and won the state title in high jump, earned a spot at Bismarck State and competes in track, basketball and volleyball. She said pressure helps her do her best—showing that local athletes can excel in many sports. KFYR-TV
