COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bismarck landfill is hosting free disposal week starting Monday, Sept. 15 when residents can bring household items, including hazardous waste and electronics, until Saturday, Sept. 20—the Household Hazardous Waste Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and proof of address is required while tire disposal still incurs a fee.  KFYR-TV
  • Communities across North Dakota commemorated the 24th anniversary of Sept. 11 with ceremonies to honor victims and first responders. At the International Peace Garden near Dunseith, a military honor guard led a memorial procession while the Bottineau School Choir performed national anthems, and in Mandan and Minot, local events included a stair climb and a 13-mile march — Gov. Kelly Armstrong ordered flags to fly at half-staff on government property.  KX News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday, dozens of mourners gathered at the International Peace Garden’s conservatory to honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11—an event marking 24 years since the attacks. The memorial featured a moment of silence, prayers led by a military captain, and student performances while organizers said they will host a similar event next year for the 25th anniversary.  KX News

  • Students at Mandan High School wrote heartfelt messages on paper strips for Suicide Prevention Week while local officials prepare for North Dakota’s youth deer season beginning Friday and giving kids a chance for their first hunt under parent supervision. Leah Wheeling, a Simle Middle School teacher with 12 years of experience, was named a finalist for Teacher of the Year by the Department of Public Instruction.  KX News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Dakota set a youth deer season to begin September 19 for 10 days, where licensed hunters ages 11 to 13 may shoot antlerless deer and those ages 14 to 15 may shoot a buck while accompanied by a parent (the adult must not carry a firearm) with hunting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset and required orange clothing. Youth hunters who are unsuccessful may join the regular deer season from November 7, and on September 20 and 21, youth under 15, veterans, and active-duty members may hunt waterfowl if they have the proper licenses and a waterfowl habitat restoration electronic stamp.  KX News
  • Burleigh County is renovating the Provident Building in downtown Bismarck to combine all county offices in one location and save over $30 million compared to a new build. The $16.5 million remodel, funded by reserve funds and federal money, is expected to take two years — officials say it will improve service efficiency.  KFYR-TV
  • North Dakota’s congressional delegation marked the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with tributes honoring victims, first responders and military service members on social platform X—Rep. Julie Fedorchak, Sen. Kevin Cramer and Sen. John Hoeven each shared messages urging remembrance and unity.  KX News
  • Mayor Mike Schmitz—running for a second term—said today he will build a new homeless shelter and mental health triage center. He stressed that government and citizens must work together as his campaign builds toward the June 9 election.  KFYR-TV
  • Secretary of State Michael Howe announced on September 9 that a contest to design a new 'I Voted' sticker—open to all residents—will help boost voter turnout for the upcoming 2026 primary elections. Submissions will open on September 15 and close on November 15, and a panel will choose finalists before the public votes in January with the winner named in March.  KX News
  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong ordered flags on all government property to be flown at half-staff on Thursday, September 11 to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks & mark 24 years since the tragedy. Residents and businesses were encouraged to pause for a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. CDT to remember the lives lost.  KX News
  • The Bismarck City Commission approved the 2026 budget on Sept 9, which funds a new $80 million police station through a half-cent sales tax and uses an $8.6 million FAA grant for airport upgrades—other projects include water treatment improvements, road expansion, and a 3% cost-of-living raise for city employees while freezing Mayor and commissioner salaries.  KFYR-TV

  • Tiffany Krumm shared how her 8-year-old daughter Eleanor was diagnosed with a rare cancer after months of ear infections and hospital tests during childhood cancer awareness month—she said ongoing treatments like regular scans and hair loss are part of their fight as they continue to manage her care. Tiffany urged other parents to trust their instincts when something does not seem right with their child's health.  KX News
