ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Former Nebraska-Omaha basketball player Deng Mayar drowned Saturday at Blackridge Reservoir—about 35 yards from shore—and his body was recovered after several hours of search despite rescue efforts by bystander Sa Mafutaga, who was treated and is expected to recover.  KX News

CRIME NEWS

  • Troopers Nevon Heiser and Steve Mayer and their bloodhounds Lorace and Bleu helped Montana authorities track Michael Paul Brown, who is accused of shooting four people at Owl Bar in Anaconda on Aug. 1—his capture came after a week on the run.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Public schools in the Bismarck-Mandan area begin classes today under a new state law that bans cellphones in high school classrooms and introduces a two-tiered bus system where elementary students are picked up first—officials are updating policies and adjusting schedules to manage these changes.  Bismarck Tribune
  • State health officials released a six-point checklist to help children return to school with healthy routines, and American Experiment North Dakota launched the Charter School Hub to support new charter schools. Bismarck residents must prepay for bulk item curbside pickup scheduled for Wednesday, August 20 — items must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m.  KX News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NDGF reminds hunters that fall turkey season starts on October 11 and runs until January 4 while 4,310 deer licenses are available from August 20 with specific rules for youth and bowhunters—waterfowl hunters now must carry a state-issued restoration stamp and a federal duck stamp is required for those 16 and older starting on September 1. Detailed regulations, including tag mailing procedures and unit adjustments, are available on the NDGF website.  KX News

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Dakota confirmed its first anthrax case this year in a beef cattle herd in Stark County—state officials advised livestock producers to consult with veterinarians on vaccination needs and to monitor herds for unexplained deaths.  KX News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bryce Lance stayed at North Dakota State after helping win a national title — he said that finishing his senior year with his teammates was more important than a move to a higher division. He will work on his route running and gaining yards as he prepares for next year’s NFL draft.  KX News
  • The University of Mary women’s soccer team will begin its 2025 season with an exhibition match against the University of Manitoba on August 23 at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The team will have a scrimmage on August 31, play its first nonconference game on September 4, and start conference play on September 19 when Minnesota State University, Mankato visits Bismarck—home games are held at the Community Bowl.  KX News
