- ➤ On August 1, the Greater North Dakota Chamber and Impact Dakota unveiled the 2025 Faces of Manufacturing list—honoring local workers who drive change in the manufacturing sector—and plans to highlight honorees weekly before a luncheon and meet-and-greet on October 10. - ➤ Bismarck’s National Weather Service reported 237 severe weather warnings through August 1—208 for thunderstorms and 29 for tornadoes—marking one of the highest counts since 1986. Chief Meteorologist Kenny Miller said high pressure from the Southeast and Midwest is forcing storm systems from the Pacific and Rockies to go around and draw Gulf moisture, but the trend should ease when the pressure moves east. - ➤ Jason Stugelmeyer began his new role as Bismarck police chief on Friday after Dave Draovitch retired this week. He has worked with the department since 2001 and plans to use artificial intelligence to save time on over 10,000 reports while city leaders review an extra $336,000 for the upgrade next year. - ➤ A section of Skyline Boulevard between the east Walmart driveway and 15th Street will close for construction beginning Tuesday, Aug 5 and lasting about two weeks, so drivers must use 43rd Avenue and State Street as a detour—Walmart and nearby businesses remain accessible via State Street. - ➤ Officers arrested 43 year old William Kelley after a tense standoff in Richardton ended on Wednesday when he barricaded himself in a basement crawl space leading to evacuations; state officials also announced plans to build four new mini prisons to ease overcrowding with the first facility expected to open within weeks. Regulators approved a waiver for Badger Wind Farm near Wishek that allows construction on 92 turbines expected to generate 250 megawatts annually and be finished by year's end + the turbines will remain at least 3.5 miles from the local airport. - ➤ Multiple laws from the 2025 legislative session took effect Friday; they raise the interstate speed limit from 75 to 80 mph, increase fines in work and school zones, and lower window tint limits. New rules in education, health and criminal justice ban cellphones in schools, ease medical marijuana access—allowing edibles soon—and cap out-of-pocket insulin costs while also launching an alert for missing Native Americans and a method to close nonconviction records.
