CRIME NEWS

  • U.S. Marshals arrested Isaac Afoakwa, owner of Bismarck Transportation Services, on Tuesday for Medicaid Fraud after Blue Cross Blue Shield received an anonymous tip that he billed for over 50 trips that never happened, totaling more than $220,000 — his bond was set at $5,000.  KFYR-TV
  • Former Bismarck mayoral candidate Isaac Afoakwa faces more than a dozen charges—including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft—after allegedly using his transportation business to fraudulently obtain over $1.6 million in disaster loans; he pleaded not guilty and will appear in court on June 25 as his federal trial is set to begin on July 15 in Bismarck.  KX News

  • Nearly half of grocery stores face supply delays after a cyberattack struck a major distributor that supplies 60 of 138 stores, leading to shortages of milk and perishables. UNFI plans to restart its network on June 15—while smaller, rural stores struggle to fill orders by hand.  Bismarck Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Proposed changes to SNAP may force Bismarck Public Schools to change how children receive free meals since nearly 20% of students already depend on food assistance + Child Nutrition Program Director Michelle Wagner said the House Bill could burden families and schools if states must cover extra costs that might lead to the program being dropped.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bismarck will hand over management of its Event Center to a third party (a national consultant said this approach will address operational inefficiencies).  Bismarck Tribune
  • City commissioners voted last night to hire a third-party management company for the Bismarck Event Center after months of concern over its operations, with Mayor Mike Schmitz saying residents deserve better service. A consultant has been hired to help guide the process & attract more community events.  KFYR-TV
  • Attorney General Drew Wrigley said Governor Kelly Armstrong did not intentionally remove a $35 million provision from the Housing Incentive Fund in the Industrial Commission Budget. Armstrong said the ruling avoids a costly special session—lawmakers now rely on the written veto message in the Legislative Journal.  KFYR-TV

  • North Dakota health leaders are reminding Bismarck residents that free support to quit smoking is available during Quit Week from June 8—14. Local teams offer one-on-one coaching and nicotine replacement therapy—helping people stop using commercial tobacco and nicotine products.  KX News
  • Nearly 100 golfers teed off Tuesday morning at Hawktree Golf Club to support cancer patients at the Sanford Health Foundation’s BlueWay Invitational, raising $75,000 for help with expenses like travel and lodging—each contribution going directly to those in need. The event featured 19-year-old Hannah Schantz, who, while battling leukemia, made her first swing to inspire others facing cancer.  KX News
