COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bismarck’s homeless population is growing as residents seek shelter at centers like Heaven’s Helpers after the city banned encampments last October—local shelters struggle to stay open 24 hours during cold, rainy days. Community members and officials say limited funds have left few safe options for those in need.  KFYR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Bismarck Civic Chorus will perform at Carnegie Hall later this week—marking its first appearance at the venue since 1998 as 40 members have been preparing since January. The group will hold auditions for next season in August.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Burleigh County Commission is holding a special meeting today at 5 p.m.—in the first-floor conference room of the city/county building—to discuss the future of the County Auditor/Treasurer position, including a petition to remove Mark Splonskowski. The meeting comes after allegations that Splonskowski misused county funds, failed to supply proper tax forms to election workers, and clashed with the county Human Resources director.  KFYR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Terry Frieboes, a retired dental worker, volunteers at Sanford Health’s Volunteer Inpatient Program—she makes coffee and checks on patients who may be lonely while helping nurses handle their duties. Her friendly work supports patient care and adds a personal touch to the hospital.  KFYR-TV
  • Sanford Bismarck Medical Center received six Women’s Choice Awards for Best Hospitals for clinical performance and patient satisfaction. The awards recognize excellence in services — bariatric surgery, patient safety, heart care, comprehensive breast centers, mammogram imaging, and women’s services.  KX News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Mary track and field team is sending 13 athletes to the Division 2 NCAA championships later this week, including sprinter Sakena Massiah—who is from Barbados—after a dominant show at the NSIC outdoor meet. Massiah, in her final college season, hopes to earn all-American status as she prepares to compete starting Thursday.  KFYR-TV
  • The Bismarck Bobcats secured their second Robertson Cup title with a 4-2 win over the Lone Star Brahmas Tuesday night, marking their first win since 2010. The team will celebrate with a welcome home party today at 3 p.m. at the VFW Sports Center.  KFYR-TV
