ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The North Dakota Game and Fish Department partnered with the University of North Dakota on a catfish study to lower the number of black bullheads in Sweetbriar Lake west of Mandan. Fisheries crews stocked over 4,000 channel catfish from Lake Oahe, which reduced the bullhead count by 44% during the first growing season — a result that shows the benefit of the state agency and university working together.  KFYR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Dan Dalan, an allergist at Essentia Health in Fargo, said that wildfire smoke carries tiny particles by wind—making allergy symptoms worse when combined with seasonal pollens like oak, birch and walnut. He advised people with allergies to spend less time outdoors when air quality is low—starting medicine before symptoms begin can help.  KFYR-TV
  • North Dakota Vision Services and the School for the Blind have helped people with vision loss since 1908 and serve about 21,000 North Dakotans who cannot see well—even when wearing glasses. Director Emily Stenberg-Brown said the department held outreach events in Minot earlier this week to offer free help with home visits and learning new ways to manage vision loss.  KFYR-TV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Pet owners must secure their dogs and cats with harnesses, seat belts, crates or carriers when traveling to keep everyone safe and avoid fines. North Dakota has no specific pet restraint laws but law enforcement may cite reckless driving if an unsecured animal distracts the driver — owners are urged to check state rules when traveling across state lines.  KX News
