  • Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library will host its Summer Reading Kickoff on May 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Library Plaza, offering interactive science experiments, dancing, chalk games, animal encounters, and treats from Luigi’s Ice Cream Truck + free admission for all ages. CRIME NEWS

  • A Bismarck man accused of raping a woman—who threatened to shoot her if she reported it—pleaded not guilty.  Bismarck Tribune
  • The trial ended in a hung jury in the negligent homicide case against 18-year-old Madisyn Heidt, charged with hitting motorcycle rider Scott Culver on the East Bismarck Expressway in 2022 (a new trial is set for July 22 at 9 a.m. following a dispositional hearing on July 18).  KX News
  • A Bismarck woman pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty and abuse charges in court Thursday after a cellphone video showed her hitting, kicking and lifting a dog by its neck outside her home on N. 17th St + police said they received 38 animal-related calls at her property since 2019 with her felony trial set for July 2.  KFYR-TV

  • Lacey Knight, a mother of four, attends full-time nursing school at BSC while balancing a part-time hospital job and a photography business. She wakes at 5 a.m. to prepare her kids before driving from New Salem to classes and graduates today with a nursing job lined up + her family’s support fueling her determination.  KFYR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Greenpeace asked a North Dakota judge today to reduce nearly $667 million in damages awarded in the Dakota Access Pipeline trial, arguing that the verdict is excessive and inconsistent with state law. Attorneys said the group could see punitive damages cut by about $43 million — a matter being reconsidered as the case moves toward another hearing on May 27.  KFYR-TV
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a state-led coal ash recycling and disposal program in Bismarck that reuses ash from power plants in roads and concrete mixes—this approach will reduce landfill waste and lessen the need to mine new materials.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that private lawsuits cannot be filed under Section 1983 of the Voting Rights Act to challenge voting bias in seven Midwest states — overturning a win for two tribes who had challenged North Dakota’s 2021 redistricting map. The ruling affects the 8th Circuit and may be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court as the tribes consider an appeal — and officials plan to maintain the current map for upcoming elections.  KX News
