- ➤ Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue will be traveling on its West Coast Dreamin’ Rescue Roadtrip to bring animals for adoption to cities including Fargo, Bismarck, and Dickinson — the group will accept adoption applications until April 28 at midnight. - ➤ Governor Armstrong signed House Bill 1160 that bans cell phones in public schools during the school day. The law, which takes effect next school year, requires students to lock away devices from the first bell until dismissal—allowing exceptions for medical needs and approved learning plans. KX News
- ➤ Dickinson State University and Bismarck State College said they are not impacted by federal changes to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies. Dickinson State will continue support for students and monitor guidelines via its IDEA Committee—while Bismarck State College made slight grant adjustments—ensuring they follow new state and federal rules. - ➤ On Friday, the Senate killed a House bill that would have raised the fuel tax by three cents per gallon after 47 representatives voted to keep a bill with a five-cent increase in the NDDOT budget bill. Lawmakers say the five-cent hike is expected to raise about $70 million — funds that will pay for road repairs once a conference committee finalizes the final tax details. KFYR-TV
- ➤ Starting May 7, travelers 18 and older must show a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative to pass airport security; ND licenses without the small star (marking compliance) may lead to delays or extra screening. - ➤ Christian Marshall pleaded guilty last September to an aggravated assault near Ministry on the Margins in Bismarck and was sentenced in Burleigh County court to seven years in prison with probation and other conditions. Lawmakers changed Senate Concurrent Resolution 4007 so ballot measures appear on the primary ballot, and law enforcement will enforce the state’s seatbelt law in its — Click It or Ticket — campaign from May 1 through June 2. - ➤ Bismarck senators failed to override Governor Kelly Armstrong’s veto on Senate Bill 2307 that would have required libraries to restrict access to obscene or sexually explicit books and add safeguards for online databases—voting 25-to-20 when 32 were needed. Supporters said the measure would protect minors while opponents argued it placed vague demands on library professionals. KFYR-TV
- ➤ House lawmakers failed to override Governor Kelly Armstrong’s veto on House Bill 1540, which would have created educational savings accounts for private school students starting with the 2026-27 school year. The override vote ended at 48—45 and stopped vouchers from being offered this session. KFYR-TV
