GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 24, U.S. District Judge Daniel Traynor ruled in favor of North Dakota—awarding nearly $28 million to cover emergency response costs during the Dakota Access Pipeline protests—and Governor Kelly Armstrong along with state senators said the decision held the federal government accountable.  KX News
  • The North Dakota House voted on Wednesday to add $50 million in funding for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library to the state commerce budget — the money will match private donations and help cover long-term operating costs for the library in Medora — while some lawmakers argue that no extra funding was needed after the 2019 approval.   Bismarck Tribune
  • North Dakota law enforcement will boost patrols from May 1 through June 2 to enforce the state seatbelt law during the Click It or Ticket campaign—aimed at reducing traffic injuries and deaths. Sheriff Terry Dillon said the campaign focuses on prevention and follows the law's shift to primary enforcement.  KX News
  • Governor Kelly Armstrong vetoed two bills—one to limit explicit sexual material in libraries and one to create a private school voucher program—after neither received the required Legislature support, with Armstrong arguing that both measures impose undue burdens without truly expanding school choice.  KX News
  • A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the United States owes North Dakota nearly $28 million for costs incurred during the Dakota Access pipeline protests in 2016 and 2017 — a decision that comes after a multiyear lawsuit filed in 2019. The ruling stated that the government’s failure to follow proper procedures caused significant harm to the state.  KX News
  • On Thursday, North Dakota lawmakers approved Senate Bill 2330 that will teach public and tribal school students from 6th grade as well as high school sophomores and seniors to recognize the signs of human trafficking—using grants instead of a direct state funding request.  KX News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Kelly Armstrong signed a law that will force insurers to respond faster to doctors' requests for treatments, reducing delays for patients.
