- ➤ The Bismarck Forestry Division will host a community recognition program and ceremonial tree planting at Custer Park on May 2 at 1 p.m., where a tree will be planted to honor the late Stan Churchill for his dedicated service. In addition, a Plant a Tree with Scheels event will run on April 29 from 3 to 6 p.m. with the first 100 families receiving a free evergreen seedling—celebrating Arbor Day and 48 years as a Tree City USA. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Society for Science selected 24 educators for its STEM Research Grants program — two Bismarck teachers received a total of $5,000 to buy classroom equipment. The funds will help these teachers bring hands-on STEM projects to middle and high school students — boosting project-based learning in their classrooms. KX News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews building the new Missouri River bridge between Bismarck and Mandan will resume work this week with double shifts to remove cofferdams and install sheet piles until mid-May; they will use quieter methods overnight where possible—though pile driving will still occur in some phases—and safety measures including navigational aids will be set up in cooperation with N.D. - ➤ The governor signed a bill Wednesday that changes the rules for prior authorization and requires insurers to respond within a set time frame—if they do not, requests may be automatically approved to help patients access needed drugs. - ➤ Governor Kelly Armstrong signed the Med Ed Bill to help train providers on emergency care for pregnant women and Minot residents will vote for a new mayor on Tuesday, August 5 following Mayor Tom Ross’s resignation. Bismarck Police released body cam video from last month’s shooting that killed 53-year-old Melanie Udell—Burleigh County Prosecutor Julie Lawyer said the officers acted appropriately—and meteorologists forecast a warming trend with increased rain chances. - ➤ A federal judge ruled that the United States must pay North Dakota nearly $28 million for law enforcement and other costs incurred during the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in 2016 and 2017. Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Attorney General Drew Wrigley, and Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer praised the decision — with Judge Daniel Traynor criticizing the Army Corps' actions as negligent.
