CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Photographer Shane Balkowitsch from Bismarck used a historic wet plate process to capture portraits of Indigenous people including Leonard Peltier, who had his prison sentence commuted after 49 years. He drove three hours to Belcourt on March 26th for a four-hour session at Sky Dancer Casino & Resort—he will donate a portrait to the Library of Congress and sell prints to help pay for Peltier’s kidney disease treatment. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Primary homeowners could soon get more property tax relief if senators and representatives resolve differences on the residence credit—debates remain on whether the credit should cover all or 75 percent of tax liability while local governments face a three percent cap. No date has been set for a conference committee meeting. KFYR-TV
- ➤ The state's information technology and commerce departments have launched a new data center that anyone can use for information on population, workforce, housing and the economy. The center is designed to give the public easy access to state data — a single location for important details. KFYR-TV
- ➤ The North Dakota Senate approved a bill that—if enacted—lets law enforcement assume the owner of a fleeing car is driving it. Some lawmakers questioned the measure during debate. Bismarck Tribune
- ➤ On April 6, the North Dakota House did not collect enough votes to override Gov. Kelly Armstrong’s veto of a tax incentive bill aimed to help businesses buying items partly made by prison inmates—Armstrong said the measure gave an unfair edge to a state agency.
