CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Bismarck man (Jason Eaglehorse) was arrested Monday night after reportedly following and threatening a man downtown with a knife and he faces a $20,000 bond. KFYR-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Legislative term limits will be on the 2026 ballot after a House vote on Wednesday reversed an earlier defeat; the measure passed with a 53 (39) vote and would let lawmakers serve a full 16-year term in one chamber starting in 2023. It also would remove constitutional limits that affected how term years are counted. KFYR-TV
- ➤ Burleigh County delayed awarding bids on the Provident Building remodel as commissioners await more offers for roofing, mechanical, electrical and asbestos abatement (10 to 13 million estimated) while planning to move most operations to the building after renovation and ruling out sales tax revenue for property tax relief (new construction would cost 35 to 52 million). - ➤ The state announced today its new State Data Hub website to help residents easily find up-to-date agency information; the website will expand (to include more resources) in the future. KFYR-TV
- ➤ Governor Kelly Armstrong signed Tyanna’s Law which increases the maximum sentence for DUI crashes causing serious injuries from 5 years to 10 years in prison—this law is named for high school student Tyanna Weeks who was injured in a crash and adds one day to the minimum penalty to prevent a misdemeanor charge. - ➤ Minot Mayor Tom Ross resigned on April 1 after an investigation found he sent a sexually explicit video to a city employee, and City Council President Mark Jantzer will serve as interim mayor. In Watford City, a deputy fatally shot a 65-year-old man who ignored commands during a domestic violence call on March 31—state lawmakers approved a bill that increases minimum sentences for human trafficking while KX Meteorologist Andre Brooks forecast that snow will soon end. - ➤ After failing on April 1, the House passed a resolution to let lawmakers suggest changes to term limits on a second vote. The measure will appear on the next ballot and would allow legislators to serve up to four full terms—changing the current limit of two terms in each chamber. KX News
- ➤ State lawmakers approved House Bill 1361 on Tuesday, raising mandatory prison terms for human trafficking offenses to 20 years for class AA, 10 years for class A, and 5 years for class B (Senator Claire Cory said the bill sends a clear message against exploitation). State senators also passed House Bill 1197 to study prisons and inmate housing (the measure aims to address inmate overcrowding). KX News
