COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bismarck’s annual Fourth of July Celebration may move from the Capitol grounds because a new state crime lab is under construction, and the Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra has stepped back as the primary host. City Administrator Jason Tomanek and community leaders are exploring options with new features and more amenities and will announce details in late April.  KFYR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Grand Forks presented its outlook saying that drought conditions will persist through spring and summer as little moisture fell over the cold winter and temperatures have been above normal. Hydrologist Allen Schlag in Bismarck said (modest moisture is expected for gardens and crops) and warned that wildfire risks will rise this summer.  KVRR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorneys from Summit Carbon Solutions argued that a pending appeal should be dismissed—landowner lawyer Derrick Brakken said that key information for the carbon storage plan was not provided and the Industrial Commission did not serve its final order properly. Judge Jackson Lofgren said he would review the arguments and issue his written opinion soon.  KFYR-TV
  • A North Dakota prison leader warned that Senate Bill 2128—if passed—will force violent offenders to serve more time behind bars and may lead to increased violence and repeat offenses. Attorney General Drew Wrigley dismissed the claim as fear-mongering and said the bill respects judicial sentencing orders.  Bismarck Tribune
  • Jim Klundt, the new Senate Sergeant at Arms with a long broadcasting background, is keeping the Senate Chambers orderly and ensuring everyone follows the rules—his work is appreciated by fellow lawmakers.  KFYR-TV
  • Bismarck Parks and Recreation District will open registration for its spring+summer programs next week. Residents should watch local announcements+updates for more details.  Bismarck Tribune
  • Bismarck’s Human Relations Committee has announced a new schedule for the annual Humanitarian Award that will honor community adults, youth and organizations for advancing human and civil rights in 2024. Nominations must include all required information and may be submitted online, by email, dropped off at the Administration Department on 221 North Fifth Street or mailed by 11:59 p.m. on April 20.  City of Bismarck

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Bismarck Event Center will host one of the longest running Emergency Medical Services conferences from April 3—5, with over 500 participants and 55 exhibitors joining pre-conference sessions and a vendor preview on April 3. The event will continue with training sessions for EMS, nursing and law enforcement on over 50 topics on April 4—and April 5.  KX News
